SEPSIS

Shapiro NI, Trzeciak S, Hollander JE et al. Crit Care Med 2009;37:96–104.

The association between outcome and several biomarkers was prospectively evaluated in a large series of patients with severe sepsis presenting at an emergency department. A panel of biomarkers was used to identify patients at risk of poor outcome.

Sepsis is common, but identifying patients with sepsis, and especially identifying those who will further develop organ failure, is still challenging. Identifying patients at risk is important not only for triage purposes but also to implement therapeutic interventions in a timely fashion. The present authors evaluated whether a panel of biomarkers could predict the outcomes of patients with sepsis admitted to theemergency department.
