This questionnaire study shows that there is a lack of understanding and consensus on the use of tourniquets among orthopaedic surgeons and theatre staff.

 

Pneumatic tourniquets are used to provide a bloodless surgical field while the extremities are being operated on. If used properly, tourniquets are safe and help improve patient outcome by reducing blood loss and operating time. Complications are infrequent and preventable; however, when they occur they can cause significant problems and complications.
