Prognostic importance of anaemia in patients with acute pulmonary embolism

Thromb Haemost 2011;106:289–95. Several methods for risk stratification of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) have been proposed; clinical decision rules, imaging of the cardiac function, quantification of the embolus load, and several biomarkers have been shown to predict hemodynamic or respiratory deterioration and death. In the current study, the prognostic value of anemia for clinical outcome was evaluated, as previous studies have reported anemia to be a predictor of adverse outcomes in patients with other acute and/or chronic cardiopulmonary diseases.
