Implantable Cardioverter - Defibrillators and Driving Regulations

Implantable cardioverter–defibrillators (ICDs)have been in use for nearly 30 years and are now a widely-used treatment for people at high risk of life-threatening arrhythmias. Because such arrhythmias also have the potential to cause abrupt incapacitation, there are implications for individual and public safety in allowing these patients to drive. This article will review the medical and regulatory issues associated with allowing patients with ICDs to drive.
