Mechanisms by which Bariatric Surgery may Ameliorate Type 2 Diabetes

The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes (“diabesity”) threaten the health and well-being of millions of Americans. As the prevalence of these two conditions rise in tandem, bariatric surgery has become an increasingly popular treatment option. In the US alone, >220 000 bariatric surgery procedures were performed in 2008 [1]. At present, bariatric surgery is the most effective therapy in producing mean long-term weight losses of 15%, which is associated with significant reductions in the incidence of comorbid conditions [2]. For this reason, bariatric surgery has garnered considerable interest as a potential treatment for type 2 diabetes patients.
