Vukusic S, Ionescu I, El-Etr M et al.; Prevention of Post-Partum Relapses with Progestin and Estradiol in Multiple Sclerosis Study Group.

Service de Neurologie A and EDMUS Coordinating Center, Bron, France.

 J Neurol Sci 2009;286:114–8.

Editor’s note: The onset of multiple sclerosis (MS) occurs most commonly in young adulthood, and has a female preponderance. It therefore frequently affects women during their childbearing years. The natural history of relapse rates during pregnancy in patients with MS has been studied in several large-scale epidemiological studies, and findings suggest that relapse rates are reduced during the final 3 months of pregnancy; in contrast, the first 3 months of the post partum period is considered a time of increased risk of clinical relapse (N Engl J Med 1998;339:285–91).
