Mitochondria are organelles that are present in all aerobic organisms. They exhibit a relatively simple structure that has been conserved from their bacterial ancestry, consisting of two distinct membranes (the inner and the outer), an intermembrane space and a matrix compartment, and a circular genome consisting of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA).
