Editor’s note: This interesting study was performed by the British Thoracic Society Difficult Asthma Network. Data from 382 well-characterized patients who fulfilled the American Thoracic Society definition for refractory asthma, and attended one of four clinics were studied. Interestingly, multiple demographic factors and rates of hospital admission, unscheduled healthcare visits, and medication use seemed to be different in these UK clinics compared with published data, and were also significantly different between the four centers. Modeling using some of these indices as dependent variables identified a significant association with clinical center.
