Epilepsy is defined as chronic, recurring seizures; a summary of the relevant terminology is provided in Table 1 [1]. It is, therefore, not a single disease but a group of heterogeneous disorders that have historically been divided into idiopathic (or primary) epilepsy, symptomatic (or secondary) epilepsy, and cryptogenic epilepsy.
